Chaos in the Skies: UAE Extends Airport Flight Suspensions

Travelers worldwide are facing major disruptions today as the United Arab Emirates extends flight suspensions at its busiest hubs. Dubai International (DXB), Zayed International in Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah Airport have all halted operations. This move comes as regional airspace remains closed following a serious shift in the regional security situation.

Why Are Flights Grounded?

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) issued the stop-work order after a high-level safety assessment. Officials are working with international partners to monitor the risks to civilian aircraft. While the closure is temporary, authorities insist that passenger and crew safety must come first. They will not reopen the skies until they can guarantee a 100% safe environment for takeoff and landing.

Airline Updates and Refund Policies

The impact on major carriers is significant. If you have a flight booked today, here is the current status:

  • Emirates: Flights are suspended until at least 3:00 pm UAE time. The airline is offering free rebooking for travel through March 20.
  • Etihad Airways: Operations in Abu Dhabi are paused until 2:00 pm. Passengers can rebook for any date before March 18 without extra fees.
  • flydubai & Air Arabia: Most services are canceled for the afternoon, with regional routes to Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon affected until March 3.
  • International Carriers: Air India, IndiGo, and Finnair have also canceled or rerouted flights to avoid the closed airspace.

Support for Stranded Passengers

In a rare move, the UAE government is covering the expenses for thousands of stranded travelers. Over 20,000 passengers have already received assistance. Transit travelers stuck at the airports are being moved to hotels and provided with meals and refreshments while they wait for their new flight times.

What Should You Do?

Airport authorities have a clear message: Do not go to the airport. Terminals are currently crowded, and check-in desks are not processing new passengers. Instead, check your flight status via the airline’s official apps or websites. Only head to the terminal once your airline confirms your flight is ready for departure.
