What Makes the 2026 Tulip Season Different

Every spring, Kashmir’s tulip garden becomes a sea of red, yellow, pink, white, and purple. But 2026 has been different from day one.

The garden opened on March 16, nearly 10 days ahead of schedule. The Department of Floriculture planted 1.8 million bulbs across 73 varieties, the highest number ever. Two new varieties imported from the Netherlands were added for the first time. A brand new souvenir shop with Kashmiri craft stalls also opened inside the garden this season.

Tourism-focused travel platforms confirm that up to 1.8 million tulip bulbs across more than 70 varieties are on display this year.

And the footfall numbers speak for themselves. Over 3 lakh visitors have come to Kashmir during the 2026 spring season, with estimates suggesting the final count may exceed 3.5 lakh.

It is genuinely unlike anything else in India.

When to Go (And When to Avoid)

The tulips do not last forever. Here is how the bloom season typically breaks down:

PeriodWhat to Expect
March 16–25Early bloom, fewer crowds, garden still filling up
April 1–14Peak bloom: most varieties fully open, best colours
April 15–30Late bloom, flowers starting to fade, fewer visitors

The peak bloom was forecast for April 1–8, and visiting on Tuesday to Thursday mornings between 6 and 8 AM offers 60% fewer crowds.

Practical tip: Weekends can see over 1 lakh visitors in a single day. Go on a weekday. Get there right when the garden opens at 9 AM for the best light and the least crowd. The garden before 10 AM is a completely different experience from the afternoon rush.

Kashmir in Spring Is More Than Just the Tulip Garden

Most people come for the tulips and leave thinking that was it. But April in Kashmir is the whole valley at its best.

Mughal Gardens: The three famous Mughal gardens, Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi, are all in bloom in spring. Narcissus, hyacinths, and cherry blossoms fill these gardens in March and April. Entry is under ₹50 per garden.

Dal Lake in the morning: A shikara ride at sunrise in April is one of those experiences that stays with you. The lake is still, the light is soft, and the Zabarwan mountains reflect on the water. Rides start from ₹300–500 for 30 minutes.

Pahalgam’s Aru Valley: An hour’s drive from Srinagar, Aru Valley turns emerald green in April as snowmelt feeds the meadows and waterfalls. It is one of the most beautiful short drives in all of Kashmir.

Cherry blossoms in Srinagar’s old neighbourhoods: Parts of the old city bloom with pink cherry blossoms in March and early April. It quietly rivals Japan’s sakura season, and almost nobody knows about it.

How to Reach Srinagar

Getting to Kashmir in 2026 is easier than it has ever been:

  • By air: Srinagar’s Sheikh Ul-Alam International Airport now has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and several other cities. Book at least 3–4 weeks in advance for April travel seats fill fast during the tulip season.
  • By train + road: Take an overnight train to Jammu Tawi, then a shared Sumo taxi or JKSRTC bus to Srinagar (6–8 hours). This is the most budget-friendly option.
  • By road from Delhi: The Delhi–Srinagar drive is around 800 km and takes 2 days with an overnight stop in Jammu or Katra.

Budget Breakdown for 4 Days in Kashmir (Tulip Season)

Budget travellers can do a 4-day trip for ₹12,000 – ₹15,500 per person.

Money tip: Carry cash before leaving Srinagar. ATMs become unreliable in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg. Keep ₹5,000–8,000 in cash per person for outstation trips.

Quick Tips Before You Go

  • Book the tulip garden ticket online: queues at the gate can be very long on weekends
  • Wear layered clothing: Srinagar mornings in April are cold (8–12°C), afternoons warm up to 18–22°C
  • Pre-book your houseboat or hotel: April is peak season, and good options sell out fast
  • Carry a portable power bank: camera and phone batteries drain fast in the cold
  • Try Kashmiri Wazwan at least once: the multi-course meat feast is one of India’s great culinary experiences. For vegetarians, Nadru Yakhni (lotus stem curry) and Dum Aloo are outstanding

The Bottom Line

Kashmir in April 2026 is not just a pretty destination. It is a short, defined window that most of India knows about, but not enough people actually take. The tulips are at their peak right now. The crowds are big but manageable on weekdays. The weather is perfect. And the entire valley, the lake, the gardens, the mountains, is at its most alive.

The tulip season runs until April 30, 2026. If you are thinking about going, do not wait for next year. This bloom will not come back.
